America loves salt! Last year it was estimated that Americans consumed over 50 million metric tons! In the US, salt is the first thing we add to our meals for flavor. Today, August 29th, is National More Herbs, Less Salt Day! At Western Eagle Foundation Discount Food and Home Goods Store, we understand that if you don’t know how to add herbs for more flavor to your dishes, chances are you won’t. Did you know that substituting herbs for salt can increase the flavor and health benefits in your meals? To help you get started, we found Tasting Table and their 14 great tips for cooking with herbs:
Stick to dried herbs and spices for sauces and braises
Shock fresh herbs in ice cold water to perk them up
Use kitchen shears to easily chop fresh herbs
Keep woody herbs (Rosemary, sage, and lavender) alive with a damp paper towel
Savory herbs can be used for sweet applications too
You can use a coffee grinder to grind dried herbs
Don’t store your herbs or spices near heat
If herbs smell dull, time to discard
Keep cilantro fresh by freezing it in ice cube trays
In a pinch, dry fresh herbs in the microwave
Don’t discount herbs in your cocktails
Make an herb bundle rather than chopping
Strip fresh herbs with a colander
Use a 1-to-3 ratio of dried herbs to fresh

Emergency food bags will be distributed at the Western Eagle Store this Friday September 1st, September 15th, and September 29th from 10:00 am to 1pm. Family member must bring or fill out self-certification form for eligibility. Please download form and bring with you to save time. Please bring your own bags, and return any boxes you take.
